Showing your brand identity across all your visual assets.

Let’s explore the depths of brand photography and discuss why it is so advantageous for businesses.

Let’s Define Branding

At its core, “branding” is more than just a logo or a catchy slogan — it’s the essence of your company’s identity, conveyed through every interaction with your customers.

A personal branding photographer focuses on creating imagery for individuals and businesses that captures the experience and essence of their brand, as well as their services and/or products. As a branding photographer, I take your brand’s story, message, identity, and mission, and create personalized and authentic images that reflect you, your personality, and your brand.

Because a branding photographer covers so many aspects of a brand, they sometimes end up taking on the roles of a product and commercial photographer as well. While a product photographer will take great images solely of your product, a branding photographer will take more of a lifestyle approach to showcasing your product and your overall brand. When I take photos of my clients and their products, I do my best to show my client’s audiences exactly what it is like to use the product AND how it’ll make them feel.

A commercial photographer, on the other hand, shoots for advertising and marketing purposes – typically on a very large scale. While a branding photographer does this as well, they have more of a personable approach in telling you and your brand’s story. A branding photographer will strive to have who you are and your personality shine through your photos to make sure your audiences build a connection with you before they even meet you.

What is Branding Photography?

Branding photography is all about creating a suite of bespoke images used to represent companies and creating a clear visual identity for your business or brand’s marketing materials.

It’s a collection of professional images that includes all your product photos, team headshots, social media and blog images and every picture you use for digital or print media – but only if they’re unique to you and tell your brand’s story.

Lots of businesses make use of stock photography instead, which is where you use licensed pictures from a library to represent your brand instead.

That can be fine for a while, but it’s hard to make a visual impact using a bank of generic photos that anyone can use.

But getting a professional brand photographer means that you’ll get a selection of unique pictures. They can help you shape that image library to the styles, settings and even colours that suit your brand.

Here’s a breakdown of what it typically involves:

Capturing Your Company’s Essence

Branding photography goes beyond just taking good-looking photos.

It captures what your company stands for and the people who make it what it is.

These photos share your brand’s story, showing off its values, personality, and what makes it different.

They play a key role in developing a consistent look and feel for your brand, helping it to be easily recognized and emotionally appealing across different platforms.

Beyond Simple Headshots

Consider branding photography as the visual heartbeat of your company.

It includes a broad range of photos — from candid images of your team in action and behind – the – scenes glimpses to product shots and customer interactions.

These visuals become essential components of your marketing materials.

You can use them across digital platforms, conferences, trade shows, and more to ensure a coherent and compelling presentation of your brand.

Why is Branding Photography important?

The world has never been more visual. It’s well known that the pictures on your website can be the difference between a visitor clicking straight back to Google and staying to read on.

But did you know that even in social media, posts with pictures or visual media are much more likely to be shared?

Having the right photos makes such a huge impact, as it sets the tone and character of your whole business offering.

Are you sophisticated and stylish? Professional and accomplished? Approachable and affordable? Your pictures can make it clear without anyone having to read a single word.

But why can’t you just use stock photography? Well, of course you can! But there are a few big problems with using stock.

Firstly, it’s usually pretty obvious. Unfortunately, stock photography libraries are full of images that are very clearly staged. Nothing says “small” like an obviously stock photo.

Secondly, it can be hard to find something specific. If your work is in a niche area, you might struggle to find the perfect picture.

That often leads to people having to use more generic photos instead of something relevant to their industry. It immediately waters down the messaging, and makes it more obvious you’re using stock.

Thirdly, there’s no real connection. Stock photography is designed to be generic. If you are trying to create messaging with your imagery, it’s really difficult to do with stock.

Lastly, there’s nothing to stop someone else using the exact same photo. Or photos using the exact same models. And it’s pretty hard to stand out in a market where everything looks eerily similar.

BUILDING A CONNECTION WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

Let’s be honest, people want to connect with other people. When customers make a decision on what businesses to purchase from, they tend to be more drawn to the brands they find relatable. In one of my previous blog posts, “5 Signs It’s Time For A Brand Refresh,” I talk about the importance of having up-to-date headshots for you and your team as well as capturing the personality of you and your business. The thought of being in front of a camera is scary (trust me, I get it), but when customers can see and relate to the people behind your brand, they will start to develop a sense of trust in your business.

As you can see, branding photography is a crucial component of establishing a relationship with your clients. It gives you the opportunity to showcase your brand’s human side, its purpose, and the team that brings it to life. Through branding photography, I help my clients show themselves and their process to their ideal clients so they can create a sense of trust, authenticity, and authority with their audiences.

HAVING A CONSISTENT VISUAL LOOK FOR YOUR BRAND

The visual look of your brand is incomplete without strong imagery for your ideal customer to associate it with. Your logo, fonts, and colors are a great foundation to build off of; but you need your own personalized branding images to complete the foundation of your brand identity. The imagery for your brand is just as unique to your brand as your logo is. It may be tempting to use stock photos, but people can spot them in a second nowadays.

So how does a branding photographer help you with consistency? By helping you utilize color, wardrobe, location, etc. to depict your brand. As I discuss in my blog post, “5 Things You Need To Do Before Your Branding Session,” whenever I’m working on the mood board and shot list with my clients for their session, I tell them to take their brand colors into account. I give my client suggestions on what color their outfits should be and what type of locations best suit their brand identity. By using all the elements of a strong visual brand identity (imagery included), you are giving your audience better opportunity to recognize your brand.

ENHANCING YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE

In today’s digital world, your online presence is defined as how easy it is for people to find your brand online. When you have a strong online presence, you increase brand awareness and establish your brand’s reputation. Think about what platforms your ideal audience uses and how you can best show up there. If you think of Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter; having your own content on those platforms will increase your chances of showing up online before your competition. One of the best ways for any brand to create their own content is through branding photography. It is my job as a branding photographer to help my client create and curate photo content that is the best representation of them and their brand. The images you get from a branding photography session are used as content to share online and on your social media platforms. With a strong online presence, you will not only increase engagement with your brand, but also drive sales up!

What makes a great brand photo?

The best thing about brand photography is that it’s unique to you and your business. But how can you be sure you’ll get fantastic photos?

The first step is to create a short brief. This will help you set out what you’re trying to achieve.

In your brief you should think about:

Where you’re planning to use your pictures. Are they for your website, social media, blog posts, brochures, adverts – or all of the above?

What type of photos you need. Do you need team headshots, personal brand photos, product pictures, office images?

Who you’re trying to appeal to.

What sort of messaging you want to show in your photos. Do you want a highly professional or an informal style? Do you want to be abstract?

Once you’ve got an idea of what you need, the next step is to find a personal branding photographer.

They will not only take the shots you need, but they’ll be able to help you organise and plan the shoot to make sure that you’re getting exactly what you need.

And planning the shoot is really, really important.

If you hire a brand photographer, they won’t just rock up to your offices with a camera. They’ll come armed with a plan so that they can get all the shots you need.

And on your end of things, it is really helpful to make sure you’ve got your offices and team ready and prepared for your personal brand photo shoot.

That means that anyone who’s going to be in the pictures has the right wardrobe and look.

It means that the space itself is clean, tidy and looking right for any office shots.

It means that any props, products or backdrops are set up and ready to go.

With a good brief and a great photographer, you’ll have everything you need to plan a really successful brand photoshoot.

Types of branding photography (with examples)

Brand photos come in a range of types and styles. It can be really helpful to familiarise yourself with some of the different photographic styles before making any decisions on your own personal branding photography.

Headshot photography

Headshots, or brand portrait photography, is probably the most obvious type of personal brand photography.

A lot of people get professional headshots for adverts, websites and even email signatures, even if they use stock for everything else.

Michelle Madden, professional London based model

CPA Recruitment in Watford

Headshots are usually team profile photos.
